The Alabama chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has denounced Sen. The Alabama Republican received another invitation to visit Birmingham mosques and meet with Muslim constituents after the organization condemned his proposed Sharia law ban as an unconstitutional attack on religious freedom.
“Senator Tuberville’s bill is an unconstitutional attack on the religious freedom of Alabamians and all Americans,” CAIR-Alabama Staff Attorney Britton O’Shields said in a statement. The organization called Tuberville’s proposal “a publicity stunt that demonstrates his contempt for religious freedom and should sound the alarm for all Americans who oppose government interference in their religious practice”.
Double-Barreled Legislative Push
Tuberville presented two related bills to Congress, which included the “No Sharia Act” to stop court enforcement of foreign laws that violate constitutional rights and the “Preserving a Sharia Free America Act” to block immigration benefits for foreign nationals who support Sharia law. The “No Sharia Act” received support from Cornyn, who represented Texas in the Senate, while House representatives Randy Fine from Florida and Keith Self from Texas sponsored companion bills.
Tuberville stated through his Senate office that Sharia Law stands against American values and should remain outside the United States. The senator demanded immediate deportation for anyone who puts Sharia Law above the United States Constitution.
“Performative Legislation,” Say Legal Experts
The “No Sharia Act” and “Preserving a Sharia Free America Act” represent two companion bills introduced by Tuberville, which aim to stop court enforcement of foreign laws that violate constitutional rights and block immigration benefits for foreign nationals who support Sharia law. The “No Sharia Act” received support from Senator Cornyn in the Senate, while Representatives Randy Fine of Florida and Keith Self of Texas introduced matching bills in the House.
According to Tuberville, Sharia Law stands against American values and should remain outside of U.S. territory. According to Tubervill, anyone who supports Sharia Law over the Constitution should face immediate deportation.
Months-Long Standoff Over Mosque Visits
CAIR-Alabama emphasized that Tuberville’s “dangerous hate-filled statements” stem partly from his ongoing refusal to accept months-old invitations to visit Birmingham mosques. The organization said such a visit would demonstrate that “Alabama’s Muslims live peacefully by practicing Sharia, the right way of life, through prayer, fasting, charity, and respect for the laws of their country”.
The group previously condemned Tuberville’s remarks on “The Benny Show,” where he warned against bringing a “Communist, Islamic atmosphere” to Alabama. CAIR-Alabama Staff Attorney O’Shields responded at the time that “American Muslims have been thriving in Alabama for decades, creating an atmosphere of fellowship, charity, and devotion to God.”
Record Anti-Muslim Discrimination
The 2025 report “Unconstitutional Repressions” from CAIR demonstrates that Islamophobia in America has achieved its most severe level in history. The organization identified discrimination against Muslim Americans who speak out about Gaza as the main reason for ongoing hostility toward Muslim Americans.
The United Nations Secretary-General has observed a concerning global increase in Muslim prejudice because Muslims experience institutionalized discrimination that worsens through media stereotypes and political leaders who use discriminatory language against Muslims.
