37-year-old man shot & killed by federal agents in Minneapolis, DHS says he was armed.
Thousands protest in severe cold, turning up the heat on ICE, arrests continue
A Minneapolis man was shot and killed by federal agents today, according to city officials. (Alex Pretti identified as man fatally shot by federal officers in Minneapolis)
The 37-year-old man is believed to be a US citizen, police said. This is the third shooting by federal agents in the city. On January 7, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, sparking protests across the country.
A week later, an ICE agent shot a Venezuelan immigrant in the leg after what they called a “targeted traffic stop.” The man, who the Department of Homeland Security has said was resisting arrest, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to CNN, the Department of Homeland Security said the man had a handgun and approached Border Patrol officers during a targeted operation. He “violently resisted” when officers tried to disarm him, and an agent shot him in self-defense, according to DHS.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said videos show masked agents “pummeling one of our constituents and shooting him to death.” He denounced the “impunity” of federal agents operating in the city.
Gov. Tim Walz called on President Donald Trump to pull ICE out of Minneapolis and allow Minnesota to lead an investigation into the shooting.
The broadcaster said Senior White House aide Stephen Miller is claiming, without evidence, that the US citizen shot and killed by federal agents in Minneapolis on Saturday was a “domestic terrorist”.
The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that the suspect, who the agency said was armed, “violently resisted” attempts by federal law enforcement officers to disarm and “an agent fired defensive shots.”
Miller’s post on social media was in response to Democratic Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who said, “Donald Trump and all your lieutenants who ordered this ICE surge: watch the horrific video of the killing today. The world is watching. … Get ICE out of Minnesota NOW. And Republicans in Congress: Stop your silence and stop being complicit.”
Miller claimed Klobuchar and the state’s entire Democrat leadership team have been fanning the flames of insurrection for the singular purpose of stopping the deportation of illegals who invaded the country.”
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has activated the State Emergency Operations Center, a source in the governor’s office told CNN, after federal agents shot and killed a man in Minneapolis.
The center “is where state, local and federal agencies coordinate the response to a disaster, emergency or terrorist event,” according to a state website.
“The governor, state director of emergency management and homeland security and other agencies direct all state resources at this center when responding to and recovering from an event,” the website reads.
On Friday, thousands protested the federal immigration crackdown called Operation Metro Surge across Minneapolis on January 23, 2026, with some estimates reaching 50,000 participants.
Hundreds of businesses closed or offered free services during the protest day, highlighting economic and community impacts of the ICE operation.
Approximately 100 clergy and several activists were arrested during protests at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and other locations, with some released the same day.
On Saturday, according to a report in The Guardian, federal immigration agents detained a two-year-old girl and her father in Minneapolis on Thursday. They transported them to Texas, according to court records and the family’s lawyers.
The father, identified in court filings as Elvis Joel TE, and his daughter were stopped and detained by officers around 1 pm when they were returning home from the store. By the evening, a federal judge had ordered the girl be released by 9.30 pm. But federal officials instead put both of them on a plane heading to a Texas detention center.
Irina Vaynerman, one of the family’s lawyers, told the Guardian late Friday afternoon that immigration officials had since flown both of them back to Minnesota and released the two-year-old into the custody of her mother. The father remains detained in Minnesota, she said.
“The horror is truly unimaginable,” Vaynerman said. “The depravity of all of this is beyond words.”
Court records and the attorney’s accounts paint a harrowing picture of the toddler and father’s detention and the frantic efforts that followed to get her released from custody and reunited with her mother.
The detention came two days after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained five-year-old Liam Ramos in Minnesota, in a case that has prompted international backlash and increased scrutiny of the Trump administration’s aggressive crackdown in the region.

What was once reserved for foreigners is now being applied to us citizens. There was a time when the label of 'terrorist' was exclusively reserved for Muslims, especially if they weren't white. At that time most Americans had cheered and encouraged their government even when it was clear that the tactics being employed were authoritarian and unconstitutional. We had warned even then that what was being done to Muslims them would one day become normalized and applied to anyone and everyone who disagreed with the government. We were told we were unpatriotic to question the government. Remember the 'global war on terror' and how Americans were fooled and scared by their government into giving up their civil liberties willingly and submit themselves to an all powerful surveillance state ? Remember Snowden - whom everyone wanted to brand a traitor but was more patriotic than most leaders of this country ?
Remember, "those who trade essential liberty for a little security, deserve neither liberty nor security'.
