Constitution Over Fear, Keller Muslims Help Reframe ‘Sharia Ban’ Into Constitutional Governance Resolution
A standing-room-only crowd packed Keller City Hall this week as residents clashed over a proposed resolution seen by many as a thinly veiled rebuke of Islamic law, but which ultimately passed in a softened form after emotional testimony from Muslim community leaders, including longtime Keller resident Mujeeb Kazi. In a meeting that stretched late into the evening, the council scrapped explicit references to Sharia. Instead, it adopted a measure drafted to affirm the supremacy of the U.S. and Texas constitutions in local governance, capping days of organizing and outreach that Kazi and others say were aimed less at winning a single vote than at resetting the conversation about who belongs in Keller.
