“Love Your Neighbor”: James Talarico Rejects Division on the Texas Campaign Trail
The Democratic Senate hopeful frames politics as an act of compassion—one that resonates with Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike.
Love your neighbor as yourself, as Talarico steers away from the politics of division, with a message resonating with Texans and beyond, says Context Corner’s Rich Matthews, who caught up with the James Talarico campaign.
Using his faith to drive humanity, it’s no secret that many Republicans are doubling down on an anti-Muslim message. But here in Texas, there’s a Democrat running for Senate, now that we haven’t had a Democrat in this Senate seat since 1961, but he’s running with a completely different message, a message of love your neighbor.
“Politics shouldn’t feel this way. Politics is just another word for how we treat our neighbors,”
At an appearance in Dallas, James Talarico told the crowd there’s a better way.
“My faith teaches me to love my neighbor as myself. Not just my neighbor who looks like me. Not just my neighbor who prays like me. Not just my neighbor who votes like me.”
While many politicians are throwing gas on the fire, preaching politics of division, Talarico’s message is unique.
“We all really want the same things. A safe neighborhood. A good job with benefits, high quality well-funded public school and the ability to see a doctor when we need one. I don’t know about y ‘all, but I am tired of being pitted against my neighbor. I am tired of being told to hate my neighbor.”
And that message is being heard and accepted by thousands of moderate Republicans, Democrats, and independents.
