Texas on Ice: Sudden Freeze Forces Schools and Cities to Shut Down
Staying home is advised as extreme weather makes travel unsafe
The extreme weather conditions forecast earlier this week by the National Weather Service have already begun disrupting schooling, forcing event cancellations and keeping people indoors.
Many districts in the DFW area have canceled both school and after-school activities, including Arlington and Plano ISD.
The list of schools confirmed closed on Monday includes Birdville, Carroll, Corsicana, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw, Ferris, Gainesville, Mabank, Melissa, Millsap, Red Oak, Waxahachie, and Weatherford ISDs.
Newsweek reported that hundreds of thousands of school-aged children were affected by school closures spanning the country on Friday as extreme cold clashed with dangerous travel conditions from the winter storm.
Millions of people remain under winter weather-related alerts and warnings from the National Weather Service (NWS), and AccuWeather senior meteorologist Bob Larson told Newsweek that school could be cancelled for days.
In some parts of the nation, officials have already decided to cancel classes on Monday to keep students safe.
The National Weather Service advised residents to stay home - and keep warm! Only travel if necessary in an emergency.
