The 61st Annual Convention of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) concluded in Dallas, Texas, over Labor Day weekend, drawing a record-breaking attendance of more than 20,000 participants. Held from August 30 to September 2 at the Hilton Anatole, this year's convention was themed "The Muslim American: Forging Faith in Action," emphasizing the importance of community engagement and active participation in American society.

Record Attendance and Diverse Programming

The convention's registration capacity was reached by the second day, leading to the closure of further registrations and leaving many eager attendees unable to participate. The event featured many sessions addressing critical topics such as women's issues, youth affairs, and international challenges, offering attendees valuable insights from experts across various fields.

One particularly notable seminar, which sparked intense discussions, focused on the contentious 'Blasphemy Law.' Scholars argued that it contradicts Sharia principles, drawing on arguments from both the Quran and Hadith. This session exemplified the convention's commitment to fostering open dialogue on pressing issues facing the Muslim community, ensuring that everyone was well-informed and engaged.

Honoring Humanitarian Efforts

A convention highlight was a ceremony honoring doctors who provided humanitarian aid in Gaza. Among the award recipients were numerous Pakistani doctors recognized for their dedication to serving those affected by conflict. Dr. Suleman Lalani, a member of the Texas State Assembly, emphasized the importance of making impactful choices in history while praising these medical professionals for their selfless contributions.

Dr. Ikram, one of the honorees, shared his emotional experiences from his time in Gaza, recounting the resilience and smiles of the Palestinian people despite their hardships. His wife, Banish Ikram, expressed pride in supporting his humanitarian mission, evoking a sense of empathy and connection among the audience.

Cultural Celebrations and Community Engagement

The convention's final day featured various recreational activities, including sports programs and a poetry session (Mushaira) showcasing talented poets from India and Pakistan. Renowned poet Abbas Tabish captivated audiences with his verses, receiving widespread acclaim. The session was presided over by celebrated poet Noor Amrohi and included contributions from poets across Kashmir.

The bustling ISNA Bazaar allowed attendees to shop for diverse products while supporting local businesses. This marketplace atmosphere contributed significantly to the convention's success.

A Platform for Dialogue and Unity

The ISNA Convention served as a gathering for Muslims and a platform for interfaith dialogue and community building. Sessions like “Planting Seeds for Pluralism in America” highlighted efforts to foster understanding among faith communities. The Shoulder-to-Shoulder Campaign facilitated discussions on equitable religious pluralism, reinforcing ISNA's commitment to promoting cooperation among diverse groups.

NTIC President Mujeeb Kazi noted that this year's convention was particularly significant for North Texas Muslims, reflecting a broader representation of Muslim sentiments across various spectrums. He emphasized that ISNA is not solely about religious services but also about shaping narratives that resonate with contemporary issues.
